Gibraltar Government Worldwide

Brussels Office
Aware of the impact that the European Community has on Gibraltar’s affairs, and its ever-increasing role in shaping Gibraltar’s legislation, the Government opened its Brussels Office in 1997. The Office is situated in the Rond Point Schuman, at the very heart of EU Brussels.

The Office is charged with keeping the Government informed, on a timely basis, of all EU legislative and policy initiatives that have an impact in Gibraltar. To this effect, the Office produces regular monitoring reports for Government’s attention, has established close links with the Community institutions and a close working relationship with the United Kingdom Permanent Representation to the EU.

The Office is run by Michael Llamas who, in his capacity as a barrister, is also charged with ensuring that the Office provides Government with legal advice on a wide variety of European Community matters. In this manner, the Office served as the platform for Gibraltar’s successful challenge in the European Court of Human Rights against its exclusion from electoral rights to the European Parliament.

Madrid
The policy of the Government is to promote tourism to Gibraltar from other markets outside the traditional market, which is the UK. The most obvious alternative source market is Spain, which is potentially of considerable importance for Gibraltar tourism. In order to maximise the opportunities available in this field, a Gibraltar Tourist Office has been set up in Madrid.

The office is located in the Torre de Madrid, an emblematic building in the heart of the city centre, on the Plaza de Espana by the Gran Via. There are a number of tourist related companies operating in the building including the British Tourist Board and a number of airlines and travel agencies.

The office is permanently manned by a marketing/public relations officer and an administrative clerk, under the control of Mr Nicky Guerrero, the Chief Executive of the Gibraltar Tourist Board. The marketing/public relations clerk is charged with establishing and maintaining contact with tour operators and travel agents in Spain, with a view to putting together new Gibraltar packages and liases with the Spanish press for advertising, editorials and press visits.

The office is proving to be a most useful sales and marketing tool for the Gibraltar Tourist Board.
