Beaches
For such a small destination, visitors are pleasantly surprised to hear that Gibraltar has six beaches around its shoreline. Four of these, Sandy Bay, Eastern Beach, the picturesque village of Catalan Bay, and Western Beach, are sandy.
Throughout the year a delightful sub-tropical climate of pleasant winters, exquisite springs and shining summers make the beaches and nearby waterfront restaurants a popular attraction. A local street map will highlight where the beaches are situated. Some of the most popular beaches include:
Catalan Bay
First settled by Genoese fishermen in the 18th century. A rocky cove with a quiet sandy beach, this has always been an ideal vantage point and was considered a haven for Spaniards fleeing from Napoleon’s invasion of Spain in the 19th century. A former fishing village and home of Genoese settlers on the Rock, this bay also sheltered Spaniards fleeing from the Napoleonic invasion of Spain. Today, it is a thriving beach resort.
Camp Bay and Little Bay
Facing the Atlantic, both bays have been fully developed as beach resorts and now include a series of interconnecting terraces providing easy access to the sea. At Camp Bay a small swimming pool has been set-aside for younger children, together with changing room facilities and a summer café.
